A local robotics team has qualified for the world championship and needs financial help to get to their destination in Houston, Texas. Students taking part in First Robotics in Austintown enjoy working together to program, build, present, practice, and compete with their robot.

Aiden Arnold enjoys sharing his knowledge about programming or coding with others.

“The way we code we use this program called JAVA. It’s a language but in a different kind of script. It’s an old language,” Aiden Arnold said.

The experience of competing not only teaches students about potential careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, but it teaches social skills and teamwork needed to solve problems and finish projects.

“It’s a competition but it is a lot of teamwork. Our team we have alliances for these where it’s three teams and you’re working together to score more points than the other alliance,” Kayla Bixler, a member of the team, added.

The robotics team achieved a great accomplishment last weekend by qualifying for the World Championship in Houston. Only 600 teams make it to this level globally.

“It is exactly like hitting the lottery jackpot. There were so many emotions at the time I found out. Almost speechless at the time,” said Andy Yantes, First Robotics Mentor. “They will interact with teams from every state but also from Canada, Australia, Turkey, China, and from countries around the world.”

“So we hope to represent us well as we are representatives of our state, our country, our team,” said Luke Kolenick, a member of the team.

But, for the team to represent our region and state from April 17th through the 20th in Houston, Texas they need to raise $12,000 fast.
